Catherine McLean knows what she’s talking about. Before I was published, I attended one of my first writing conferences and signed up to pitch to two agents. My first pitch session was a major fail. I left without even a request for pages. Before my second session, I met with Catherine, who helped me polish my presentation. The second pitch resulted not only in a request for pages but, two weeks later, an offer of representation.

How I Became "The Pitch Doctor"
THE BEGINNINGS
At a Pennwriters conference 25 years ago, the president of the organization "volunteered" me to sit in a corner of the Hospitality Room and help some very nervous writers practice and hone their pitches. That one-time stint turned into many conferences, earning me the title of "The Pitch Doctor." Many of those writers took my advice and let me know they were asked for partials or fulls of their manuscripts—and they later became published authors.
THE SKILLS
In my own quest to write a great marketing pitch, I read how-to books and attended numerous in-person and online workshops, including agent-editor workshops and panel discussions at various conferences that dealt with pitches and synopses. As a result, my pitches got my novels onto agents' and editors' desks, as well as publication.
Such expertise led to my being asked, in 2017, to do an online course, Make That Pitch. Then came doing more workshops on pitches and pitching.
